The 19-year-old Elite Dressage team rider Tom Carter rode Newton Despina to victory in the preliminary silver class at the 2023 British Dressage Championships held at Somerford Park on 14 - 17 September 2023.

Winning the largest class at the Nationals with 43 competitors, Carter forged his break through on the national dressage scene.

Success at the British Nationals

The preliminary silver class is aimed at those new to dressage as is the case for Tom and his 4-year old ride Newton Despina (by Danone x Grand Galaxy Win x Dayano) case. Despina was bred at Newton Stud and purchased as a two-year old by Elite Dressage’s head rider Beth Bainbridge who trained the combination.

Despina has already been a part of the extensive embryo transfer program offered at Newton Stud. The Devon based stallion station and breeding farm is delighted to have bred three top five horses at the Nationals, including preliminary silver class fifth placed Newton Van der Sar (by Van Gogh x Ampere) as well as the dam of the third placed horse Vania Pickles' Sienna.

Beth Bainbridge and Lauren Taylor’s exciting prospect WHD Elton (by Emilio x Diamond Hit x Ravel) were crowned reserve champion in the 5-year old division of the British Young Horse Championships and received great compliments from the panel of judges, who earmarked him as ‘one to watch’ for the future.

The team of Newton Stud and Elite Dressage have produced several other successful horses over the championship period.

The Next Generation

Back home in Devon, the Elite Dressage team are busy with the next generation and have a selection of spectacular 3-year olds to for sale by top stallions including Blue Horse Baron, Ampere, and Feinrich.

As usual, they are available to back and bring on and do the all important ‘firsts’ with the youngsters following purchase.

The location in the rolling hills and indoor and outdoor facilities at the yard creates the ideal environment for future superstars to be produced.
