Ibiza's Sun, Liberty, and Space X were the foals that achieved the highest bid in the 2023 Westfalian summer foal auctions in June and July. While high quality foals achieve a decent selling price, many foals did not find new owners as the sellers' reserve price was not met and they were bought back.

Has the Market Cooled Down?

The major breed societies in Germany, not only the Westfalian society, are noticing a considerable drop in prices for foals offered at auctions this year.

Whether the market has cooled down due to inflation and the economic crisis caused by Covid pandemic and the War in Ukraine, or whether to the non-stop (over)flow of foals auction across Europe, or whether price expectations of breeders have become unrealistic (for normal quality foals) are factors that need to be discussed.

"We have to reconsider the direction we have taken in the foal selection for the coming year. For the moment, however, we also want to stick to the line of giving many breeders the opportunity to offer their foals for marketing at our platform,"  Westfalian auction manager Thomas Münch admitted.
